2007 Oaxaca Trip - Teotitlan del Valle & Mitla

We bought rugs in Teotitlan del Valle

There are fine woven rugs made in this village and numerous families dedicated to that production. Some are better know than others and it’s nice to visit family home studios to see the process of how they are made as some still use the old fashion techniques of carting their own wool, spinning it, dying it with natural colors and finally weaving on fine solid wooden loom structures.

Day of the Dead Teotitlan del Valle

After we went and visited the family of weavers we met them at the graveyard to celebrate the returning of the souls back to the graves.

Mitla Archaeological site
The architectural features here are unique in comparison to the rest of the sites of the valley and that’s based on the elegance with which it was built. The building technique was accomplished using independently carved stone mosaics, interlocking them into the walls like a jig saw puzzle without any mortar in between and painted in beautiful colors.

This is where most of that liquor is made and on the short drive you can see fields and fields of agaves growing for that purpose.
