Platinum Printing and Beyond: Using Digital Negatives
Combine
classic printing processes with cutting edge digital negative technology
The Platinum and Palladium printing processes are some of the most beautiful alternative
processes available. Like many alternative processes, a contact negative the
size of the print is required.
This workshop combines these exquisite classic printing processes with
cutting edge digital negative techniques to yield beautiful fine prints.
Learn how to calibrate the platinum printing process and make a digital
negative
In this hands-on, intensive three day workshop, students will learn how to
calibrate the platinum printing and the newer Na2 Palladium process for
their use, prepare their image for printing and to create a digital negative
to produce a fine print.
Learn how to coat and prepare paper for Platinum Printing
Working closely
with Kim Weston and Brian Pawlowski, participants will become familiar with
the Palladium printing process, how to coat and prepare paper, then expose
and print their image.
Common
Problems Addressed
Common problems and their solutions will be covered
in the course of the workshop, and a discussion about the differences of the
digital negative approach vs. a traditional silver negative approach will
add depth to the student's experience.
Look at other types of processing
While focusing on Platinum and Palladium printing, the methods shown are
applicable to a wide range of other processes, some of which we will be
looking at.
Walk away with the skills
The students will walk away with the
skills and knowledge to pursue these processes in their own work.
NOTE: You
can still come and join us if you want to learn how to make Platinum Prints
and not digital negatives. The only thing required is a large enough
negative to contact print with - preferably 4x5 or 8x10.
Participants: Limited to 8
Requirements: A basic knowledge of Photoshop is required. Three images
(digital files) to
choose from to work on, at least 8" x 10" at 300 dpi.
TIFF or Photoshop format.
Recommended: Students are encouraged to bring their own laptop to work on.
And work to share
with the group, the prints selected for sharing should be finished prints,
not work in progress.
