The San Juan Batista Mission and The San Benito County Historical Park

New 4 Day Workshop!

Join us this spring at the San Juan Batista Mission
The San Juan Batista Mission is the largest of the California Missions. It was founded in 1797 and is the fifteenth of the twenty one missions built in California. Rich with culture and history, the town of San Juan Batista is located in the heart of the noted San Juan Valley between the Gabilan Mountains and Flint Hills.

Special access to areas restricted to the public
During this workshop we have been granted special access to areas normally restricted to the public; the museum (The present museum rooms used to be the padre's living quarters and the work areas for the Native Americans), areas within the chapels (altars, bell tower) cemetery and gardens (the exquisite gardens are where the Indians learned their skills of carpentry, tanning, weaving, and candle making). We will be joined by local archeologist Ruben Mendoza, who has extensive knowledge of the mission and its history.

Visually Stimulating!
The mission sits directly adjacent to the San Juan Batista Historic State Park, which has the only Spanish Plaza left in California. These historic buildings are filled with unlimited photographic possibilities.

Working Mission
The Old Mission San Juan Bautista has had an unbroken succession of pastors since its founding on June 24, 1797.

The Chapel
In the beautifully painted chapel there are animal prints in the tiles that were made while the tiles were left outside to dry in the sun. They also have a "Cat Door" carved into the blue side door in the Guadalupe Chapel. This allowed cats' access at all times to catch mice. In the 1800's mice were serious pests eating much of the harvest.

Last Day of Workshop
The last day of the workshop we will be going to The San Benito County Historical Park located a short distance from San Juan Battista. www.sbchistoricalsociety.org - click on Historic Park to see some of the photographic opportunities. This county park is dedicated to preserving the history of San Benito County with relocations of historic buildings, farm equipment etc. We will have access to all buildings.

Location
San Juan Bautista is about a 40 minute drive from Carmel CA. The surrounding rolling hillsides green and vibrant at this time of year.

Experience
This workshop is open to all levels of experience and to film and digital cameras. Any size camera, film or digital is good for this class.
