Pixels to Platinum : Perfecting the Digital Negative for  Platinum Printing
with special guest teacher R. Mac Holbert from Nash Editions

This special three-day workshop offers participants an opportunity to combine state of the art digital technology with traditional darkroom techniques. Students will learn how to utilize a desktop Epson printer to create high-quality negatives for making traditional platinum prints.

Instructors:

R. Mac Holbert is the co-founder of Nash Editions, widely regarded as the finest digital printmaking facility in the world. Mac teaches workshops around the world including the International Center for Photography in New York, Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Aspen, CO and the Santa Fe Workshops in Santa Fe, NM. He will illustrate the steps and workflow he follows in the creation of digital negatives. The tips and techniques he teaches will also apply to basic optimization of digital photographs for inkjet output.

Kim Weston is an accomplished fine-art photographer and teacher with over thirty years of experience. Kim will lead the
class through the simple techniques for platinum printing. Covering such topics as: hand coating, contrast control, film exposure and development for platinum printing, paper choices, choosing UV light sources and final print presentation.

Requirements for class enrollment.

  • A working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop / Elements is crucial.

  • A laptop computer with Adobe Photoshop / Elements is highly recommended.

  • Digital images should be: at least 8” x 10” @ 300 DPI
    Photoshop or TIFF format RGB or Greyscale.
    Work in adjustment layers or bring the original capture or scan.
    If the image is scanned make sure hardware sharpening is turned OFF.

  • Bring traditional film negatives up to 4x5 inches or digital prints as “aim” prints

  • Scanning is time intensive – time better spent learning optimization techniques so plan to bring several digital images to work on. Color images can be used.
