Kim Weston - Painted Photographs at Exposed Gallery Carmel CA
Kim Weston - Painted Photographs at Exposed Gallery Carmel CA

Greetings!

Fall has been pretty nice here on the central coast. Kim's garden is still producing food. We still have golden delicious and red delicious apples on our trees. Our "Beverly Hills" apple tree has produced 2 crops of apples this year! I have never heard of that happening! The Meyer lemon trees are full of sweet juicy lemons and the garden is still producing tomatoes, a few zucchini, sweet peas and of course the chard is still thriving. Kim and I always argue about the apples, I like to keep them on the tree as long as possible - its perfect storage as far as I am concerned, but he loves to pick them in big bags and give them away to our friends and neighbors. Kim is in Montana right now and it is snowing with about 8 inches of snow on the ground. In the meantime I have taken every opportunity to be down on Carmel beach - if we are friends on FB you have seen all of my posts.

Kim Weston - Print of the Month

November's photograph, Oaxaca Nude #11 was taken in Oaxaca during our workshop "Following the footsteps of Edward Weston" a few years ago. We spent time at the Manual Alvarez Bravo Center photographing and using their darkroom to make platinum prints. Kim loved the light in Oaxaca and guessed Edward did too. It was a special visit to see the same places Edward saw so many years ago. This special offer available until the end of November 2011. $250 normally $400. A perfect Christmas gift for someone who loves photography!

Shows

See our upcoming Exhibits for more information about Kim's participation in the Miniature Show at the Exposed Gallery in Carmel (images above - Opening on November 25) and the upcoming show in December at the OpenShutter Gallery in Durango CO.

Catching up

October was a great month for me. I went to Lake Powell with Kim for a workshop and then I went to Italy with my girlfriend and her daughter. 2 weeks of laughing, drinking wine and getting lost (well not all of the time). We saw so many wonderful things, eat some amazing food and walked for miles!

As the days get shorter I will be posting more and more. The holidays are upon us and I hope you are getting ready for some Turkey and festivities. I do miss the late night sunsets but I don't miss the dark mornings traveling to Monterey to do yoga. Maybe next October I should plan to be on vacation again. Just until the time change that is.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! We are thankful you are in our lives. Thanks for spending time with us, purchasing our work and being our friends.

Forever filled with gratitude,

Gina, Kim and Zach

Visitors

August and September were busy months with at least a dozen visitors from all parts of the world coming to visit us here at Wildcat Hill. A couple of the many highlights were meeting the director of The Center for Creative Photography, Katharine Martinez and Ruth McCutcheon. And Carmel Mayor Sue McCloud, her nephew Stuart and his family.

Bodie House

We have also had lots of guests come and stay in Bodie House. George Holz a very accomplished photographer from upstate NY, came and stayed a week with us while I was gone. Kim and George had fun visiting, photographing and printing in Kim's darkroom. (Well, Kim printed). Then he returned with his son Josh and we celebrated his 15th birthday. We meet so many cool people!

Workshops

Labor Day was the last workshop of our 2011 season at Wildcat Hill. We had a fun full weekend with our models coming up from Los Angeles, and our participants coming from all over the world (we had a special guest from Israel). We had a wonderful time getting to know each other and the models did a superb job. We are so lucky to have them. We had one new model, Russia. A beautiful person with an amazing name. We had 2 women which is always great for the dynamics of the group. 4 of the participants were returnees. Thank you everyone!

2011 Fall Studio Nude Workshop

Our special guest artists for the night: Huntington Witherill and Chuck Davis. Huntington has a show at The Center for Photographic Art, up until Oct. 1 and Chuck was just involved in Monterey's Underwater Shoot-out &  film festival. He and several other underwater photographers gave great presentations of their prior work. Amazing!

Kim is still teaching this winter - one on one workshops or darkroom instruction whatever is your fancy.  And remember to book your winter vacation with us!

I just talked to Christa Meola she is back from her wonderful workshop in Florence, Italy and she gave me some wonderful tips. I get to go to Italy in October! I am so excited! Hard work pays off! Zach is having a great time being home going to the local JC and he evens gets to surf now and again. We met with the Chair Professor from the School of Business at CSUMB. It looks like Zach will be continuing his major in business after all.

That's all for now, thanks for buying our prints, coming to our workshops, staying in Bodie House and becoming our friends!

Take Care,
Gina, Kim and Zach

Kim Weston - Mission San Miguel

Greetings!

Our last newsletter left off as we were getting ready to go to the San Miguel Mission for a 3 day "Retreat Workshop" with Kim Weston, Randy Efros and Roman Loranc. We spent 3 days and nights in the San Miguel Mission quarters. The rooms were clean and sparse with crisp white bedspreads and the Mother Mary watched over you as you slept.

Upon our arrival we toured the mission with archeologist Ruben Mendoza while he explained the history and some of important events that took place there.

San Miguel Mission Chapel

We rose early to photograph in the morning light, met as a group in the afternoons, and then back out to photograph in the evenings when the light was still good. We stayed up late to do some night photography in the mission hallways with Father Larry, watching Roman Loranc create some of his magical photographs! Martin Vargas Garcia taught us how to use a flashlight and "paint with light" and we ran around the mission in the night - until my battery ran out on my digital camera. Not good.

What a magical weekend it was spending time with friends and playing in such a quiet sacred space. Thanks to all that came. Photos from the workshop are due on July 1st for consideration for the San Miguel Workshop Book, that we will be publishing soon!

Paris in May

Kim Weston in Paris in May

The last 2 weeks of May we spent in Paris! It was our first visit and we stayed right in the heart of the city, next to the Pompidou Museum. This museum was built with all of the infrastructure on the outside. Very interesting! The Parisian's don't like it, they think it is very ugly. The Pompidou has a following of tourists, locals, nomads, gypsies, and homeless. At times we felt like we were in the heart of Disneyland. During the day, the musicians and the drumming or the chanting or whatever, never seemed to stop.

Kim Weston at the Pompidou Museum

When we rented the apartment it said it was lively during the day and quiet at night. Well we can tell you that the city never sleeps (near the Pompidou) and the Parisians are up all night long! And the city gets up very slowly.

We toured many of the famous museums like The Louvre, Musee d' Orsay, The Orangerie - this was my favorite. The museum houses Paul Guillaume's collection of impressionists paintings! It was so amazing to see the work in person.

Kim Weston viewing Henri Matisse

We went because our dear friend Sylvie Blum was going to be there. She took some iconic photographs while she was there. She got up before dawn and photographed in the early morning light before everyone was up. Kim photographed in our apt. It had lot of windows and wonderful afternoon light!

All in all we had a wonderful time and are so glad we went!
